Want to understand more about the Golden Visa and how you may be eligible? In this article, we will briefly cover the many opportunities this path to citizenship can offer to property investors.
For ten years now, the Golden Visa programme has been in operation in Portugal, allowing investors to gain residency status through a fast-track 5-year arrangement. This is an incredible opportunity for those who wish to attain EU citizenship for their families, and in turn, allows Portuguese cities and urban areas to flourish and grow at a phenomenal rate. Every year since 2012, Golden Visa beneficiaries have contributed €800Million to the Portuguese economy – a trend that looks set to continue well into the future.

So why choose Portugal for your property investment? Setting aside the opportunity for European residency and the pathway to citizenship, there are other reasons why Portugal should be your number one choice for investment in Europe.
With a wonderful climate, healthy living, superior educational options at all levels, exceptional healthcare for all, and an abundance of attractions and activities to enjoy, you really could not ask for a more up-and-coming region in which to hang your hat.
For those of you who may be interested in the Golden Visa programme, the only stipulations that apply are that you are over 18 years of age, have a legal source of income and have never had a criminal conviction.
The beauty of the Portuguese Golden Visa Programme is that it is incredibly family-friendly when compared to similar programmes in operation across Europe.
Who can use the Golden Visa Programme for Portugal?
Let’s take a look at who can be included in the Golden Visa programme:
- The principal investor
- The spouse or partner of the principal investor
- Minor children
- Unmarried children under the age of 26 **
- Parents of the principal investor
** Where investors wish to include children under the age of 26 on their application, the following stipulations apply:
- The child must be unmarried.
- The child must be studying full-time at third level.
- The child must be registered at the same address as the principal investor.
When a residence permit is granted through the Portuguese Golden Visa programme, a residence permit for one year is initially granted. After one year has passed the permit is then renewed for a further two years, and again for a final two for a total of five years.
Once this five-year period has passed, the principal investor can then apply for a permanent resident permit for themselves and any other persons included in the initial applications. Citizenship can be sought once this five-year period has passed.
