The Golden Visa Program in Portugal grants a Golden Residence Permit for non-EU nationals. This Golden Card permits the right to live, work, and study in Portugal and free travel around Europe’s Schengen Area. You must hold the investment for 5 years and visit the country 7 days per year or 14 days every 2 years to comply with the terms and conditions. This is a golden opportunity not to be missed as it offers a Portuguese Passport application at the end of the 5th year which is for life.

For those who may be seeking EU citizenship and Portuguese residency, the Golden Visa investment programme is the perfect opportunity for current non-EU nationals. This incredible investment programme, allows you to secure citizenship for the entire family without ever having to make the move to Portugal. When you contact Niamh here at Property Chic, she will guide you through every step of the process and will ensure that you receive the best personal service from first contact through to completion of investment.

The Portuguese Golden Visa scheme can allow you and your family to live, work or study in Portugal without any restrictions on travel across 185 countries.

How the Portuguese Golden Visa Scheme Works

There are a number of terms and conditions that need to be met in order to qualify for the Portuguese Golden Visa:

Applicants must invest a minimum of €500,000 into properties that are covered under the Golden Visa Investment Scheme. These will typically include commercial real estate, funds or nominated residential properties that qualify for the scheme. This investment must be held and secured for a minimum of five years.

The relevant family members will need to be submitted for consideration under one application form, and any member of the family can apply. Upon application acceptance, you and your family members will be required to spend a minimum of 7 days per year in the country, this scheme does not require that you reside in the country on a permanent basis.

Upon acceptance of your application, you will be entitled to work, live or study in the EU with immediate effect. As an EU Citizen, you may now also avail of subsidised university rates for all members of the family.

Holders of a Portuguese Golden Visa can also avail of benefits when reuniting family members. The family members listed below will be permitted to join the Golden Visa holder in Portugal with eligibility for citizenship after 6 years and permanent residence after just 5 years. This is an immense benefit for those who wish to reunite with family members in a safe, legal manner. The following family members can be included in this family reunion scheme:

What is Involved in the Portuguese Golden Visa Application Process?

The very first step in the application process will be to enlist the services of a Portuguese lawyer, who is well-versed in the Golden Visa process. This lawyer will undertake to gather all the necessary documentation to support your application and will organise a Portuguese tax number that can be used for the entire family. The lawyer will also assist the main applicant with opening a Portuguese bank account.

Once the above step has been completed, you will then move on to the investment part of your application. A minimum deposit of €500,000 will need to be transferred in to your new Portuguese bank account prior to deciding on the correct investment for you. In most circumstances, we find that investment in real estate through the fund option, is the most cost-effective choice for primary applicants.

Once the funds have been deposited and your investment has been identified, your legal representative will then submit your Portuguese Golden Visa application, along with all supporting documentation for consideration. This process will be completed online through the SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros).

The next step in the process will be a pre-approval issued by the SEF, and a biometrics appointment will then be scheduled for you and your family.

The biometrics appointment will require each family member attached to the application to be present for one day. At this appointment, fingerprints and facial scans will be captured from each individual at the offices of the SEF, where your lawyer will also be present.

Subsequent to the biometrics appointment, you can expect to wait 3-6 months for full approval and issuance of your Portuguese Golden Visa cards.
